The card outline is a standard, not a choice
Payment cards use the ID-1 format defined in ISO/IEC 7810: 85.60 mm wide by 53.98 mm high. Financial transaction cards are specified at 0.76 mm thick. The corners are rounded to a radius in the region of 3 mm. These figures are not house style, they are what makes a card fit an ATM throat, a POS terminal and a wallet slot, and they are the same for every issuer in every market.
For design purposes this means the canvas is set before anything else is decided. Artwork is prepared at the trim size plus bleed, and the manufacturer's template defines how much bleed they want, commonly a couple of millimetres on each edge, but this is a per-manufacturer figure and their template is the authority, not a number you find online.
The practical consequence is that a card design is laid out inward from the edges. Anything that must not be clipped needs to sit inside a safe zone, and anything that runs to the edge needs to run past the trim into the bleed so a slight shift in cutting does not leave a white sliver along one side.

Elements that occupy space whether you like them or not
Several components have to appear somewhere on a card, and each of them takes a bite out of the composition. A design that ignores them looks excellent as a flat rectangle and falls apart the moment it is placed on a real template.
The contact chip is the most demanding. Its position on the card is defined by standard, which means the chip module lands in the same region on every contact card and the artwork has to work around a metallic square that is not going to move. Designs that centre a logo or a strong graphic motif in that area have to be reworked, and it is much cheaper to discover this at the concept stage than after approval.

- Position is defined by ISO/IEC 7816-2. Treat it as a fixed object in the layout, not something to be nudged.
- Contactless indicator
- The EMVCo contactless symbol has its own artwork and placement rules. It is supplied as approved artwork rather than redrawn.
- Scheme mark
- Visa, Mastercard and other schemes specify size, clear space and permitted variants for their marks. Your scheme or issuing partner confirms which variant applies to your programme.
- Magnetic stripe
- Where present, it occupies a band across the back near the top, with its position and width defined by ISO/IEC 7811.
- Signature panel
- Still required in some markets and optional in others. Confirm with your issuer before designing the back around its absence.
- Regulatory and issuer text
- Customer service numbers, issuer statements and legal lines are usually mandated and usually longer than the designer would like.
Card numbers: printed, embossed, or absent
How the card number appears changes the design significantly. Embossed characters are raised from the surface, sit in a defined region and follow a specified character size, they impose a rigid horizontal band across the front and they show through on the back. Indent printing puts the number on the surface instead, flat and far more flexible in placement and typography.
Numberless cards move the number into the app entirely and leave the front almost empty. This is now common for digitally native programmes and it is the single change that most opens up a card design: it removes a long line of fixed-width digits from the composition and lets the front become a proper graphic surface.
The choice is not purely aesthetic. It affects personalisation cost, what your processor supports and what your customers expect. Decide it before concepts begin, because a design built around a numberless front does not convert cleanly into an embossed one.
Front and back are one design, not two
The back of a card carries the elements nobody wants to look at: the magnetic stripe if present, the signature panel if required, the security code, the issuer's legal text, and often a customer service number. It is easy to treat it as a dumping ground, and it shows.
In practice the back is where a card design proves itself. The same typographic system, the same spacing logic and the same restraint applied to a surface full of mandatory content is what separates a considered card from a decorated one. It is also the side a customer sees whenever they turn the card over to read a number.
Colour, finish and the limits of what prints
Card production is not the same as printing on paper. Colour behaves differently on a plastic substrate, finishes interact with the artwork, and some effects that look convincing on screen cannot be reproduced at all. Matte, gloss, spot varnish, foil and metallic inks each have their own behaviour and their own cost.
Two failure modes are common. The first is a design that depends on a gradient so subtle that it bands once printed. The second is a design that relies on a colour sitting outside what the process can achieve, which then arrives visibly duller than the approval PDF. Both are avoidable by designing with the production method in mind and by treating the manufacturer's proof, not the screen, as the reference.
The mistakes that come back from the manufacturer
Card designs are rejected for a small and repetitive set of reasons, almost none of which are aesthetic. Knowing them is worth more than any amount of general advice.
- Artwork supplied without bleed
- Leaves a white edge when the card is cut, because cutting has tolerance.
- Critical content too close to the trim
- Type or a logo that reaches the safe-zone boundary will eventually be clipped on some cards.
- Something important placed under the chip
- The chip position is fixed; whatever sits there disappears.
- Scheme mark altered
- Recoloured, rotated, stretched or given insufficient clear space. Scheme marks are used as supplied.
- Raster artwork where vector is required
- An image placed into the layout will not reproduce cleanly at production resolution.
- Fonts neither embedded nor outlined
- The manufacturer does not have your typeface, and substitution changes the design.
- Colour left undefined
- An unspecified colour becomes the manufacturer's interpretation of it.
Designing for the personalised layer
Almost everything on a card is printed identically across the whole batch, but a few elements are added per card: the cardholder name, the card number where one is displayed, the expiry date, and sometimes a product or tier identifier. These arrive after the base artwork and they are applied by a different process.
For the designer this means those areas cannot be treated as free space. They need a defined position, a legible background behind them, and enough room for the longest realistic value, names are longer than the placeholder in the mockup, and a design that fits "Anna Weiss" perfectly may not fit a genuinely long name.
It also means the typography of the personalised elements may not be fully under your control. What is available is determined by the personalisation process your manufacturer uses, so it is worth confirming before the design commits to a particular look for those lines.
Vertical or horizontal, and which scheme mark
Two decisions get made before a single layout exists, and both are easy to leave open by accident.
The first is orientation. A vertical card is read the way it is held at a terminal, and it has become the default for a lot of digitally native programmes. A horizontal card is the traditional arrangement and still what most people picture. This is not a late styling choice: the magnetic stripe, the signature panel and the scheme mark all sit differently, and a vertical layout with a horizontal back is a specific decision rather than an oversight. Pick one before concepts begin.
The second is which scheme mark you are entitled to use. Schemes publish marks for different product tiers, and the tier you carry is decided by your issuing agreement, not by preference. A premium mark on a standard programme will be rejected, and finding that out after approval is expensive. Confirm the exact variant with your issuer or scheme contact and give it to your designer as artwork, not as a description.

What to settle before design starts
Most delays in a card design project come from decisions that were still open when concepts began. The list below is short, and answering it up front removes almost all of the avoidable rework.
- Formats
- Virtual, plastic, metal, or a combination that must stay coherent.
- Orientation
- Vertical or horizontal. It changes the whole layout, front and back.
- Scheme
- Which scheme, and which mark variant your programme is entitled to use.
- Number treatment
- Embossed, indent printed, or numberless, and on the front or the back. This one decision shapes the whole layout.
- Mandatory text
- The exact wording your issuer requires, in the language it must appear in.
- Fonts
- Either licensed fonts you supply, your existing brand fonts, or a recommendation from us.
- Manufacturer
- If already chosen, their template can be honoured from the start.
